Collingwood’s AFL Women’s team are gearing up for their first away game this season; a trip where they’ll jump on a plane and head north to face the undefeated Brisbane Lions in a must-win round three clash. 

At the Selection Table

Despite last week’s loss to Melbourne, coach Wayne Siekman was relieved his side had no injury concerns coming out of the game.

However, the coaches will be forced to make a change at selection this week, with midfielder Sophie Casey set to miss the next two games after accepting her suspension for the late bump on Melbourne’s Meg Downie.

18-year-old Georgia Walker will make her AFLW debut, while ruck Ruby Schleicher and Lauren Tesoriero will be given a second chance to impress after being omitted in round two.

Recent Form

The Brisbane Lions are one of the most in-form teams in the competition; having won their first two matches on the road against Melbourne and Fremantle respectively.

Both wins were particularly impressive, having beaten the Demons in wet conditions in the opening round, before dusting off the Dockers in what is considered the most difficult interstate match across the competition.

Currently sitting in third position on the ladder, the Lions will be raring to go in front of their first home crowd.

On the other hand, the Magpies head to Queensland on a mission to bring home their first AFLW victory.

Back-to-back losses at Ikon Park in the first weeks of the competition have left the team sitting at the bottom of the ladder.

The Pies were impressive in the first half against Melbourne, but a win on the road against the Lions would galvanise this team heading into the back half of the season.     

Keep an eye on...

- Collingwood’s Amelia Barden (No. 38) is a tough midfielder who has had an impressive first two matches, with 14 disposals, five tackles against Carlton, and another 12-possession, seven-tackle game against the Demons last week. When Barden gets her hands on the ball early in the contest, good things tend to follow for the Magpies.



- Keep an eye out for Brisbane’s twin towers in the forward line. Sabrina Frederick-Traub and Tayla Harris have put in match-winning performances for the Lions in both of their games. In two matches, Frederick-Traub has amassed 18 touches and kicked 2.1, while Harris was rewarded with a round two Rising Star nomination after her inspiring fourth-quarter performance against the Dockers last Sunday.

- The weather. Queensland is known for its scorching temperatures, and Saturday’s twilight fixture will be no exception. Brisbane will be mostly sunny, with a top of 32 degrees. There’ll be plenty of interchanges, water bottles, ice vests and sunscreen bottles ensuring the players stay sun smart and hydrated throughout the two-hour contest.


- Of the 40 goals kicked across the second round of AFLW, most were converted during the third quarter of each game. After Collingwood’s electric first half against Magpies, they failed to score after half time. On the other side of the coin, the Lions have been consistent across all eight of their quarters, having not dropped a quarter to their opposition to date.
