Collingwood and Greater Western Sydney will face off in a Saturday twilight preliminary final after the Giants held on in a thrilling semi-final against Brisbane.

Meanwhile, Richmond will host minor premier Geelong on Friday night in a rematch of their memorable 2017 qualifying final, which the Tigers won en route to their drought-breaking premiership.

The Giants led the Lions by 20 points midway through the final term on Saturday before the home side ground its way back into the content, but Brent Daniels' winning goal in the dying minutes sent GWS into a third preliminary final in four years.

Earlier, the Cats ended West Coast's premiership defence in emphatic fashion on Friday night, downing the Eagles by 20 points to book a clash with the red-hot Tigers.

Travis Auld, the AFL's general manager of clubs and broadcasting, said the Collingwood-GWS prelim had been scheduled as a twilight game to enable the Giants to return to Sydney that evening.

Both preliminary final matches will see all teams have at least a seven-day break leading into those games, and the prelim winners will also have a seven-day break before the Toyota AFL Grand Final.
