Dawes set for training test
Chris Dawes needs to impress at training if he is to get back into the Magpies' team.
Dawes was dropped from the Magpies' side ahead of Saturday night's final round clash with Essendon at the MCG after weeks of dubious form.
With the club's VFL team out of the finals, Dawes has no choice but to earn his spot back through positive performances on the training track.
Reid said he was up for the task.
"He's obviously shattered he's out of the side. His form obviously hasn't been up to the standard that it has [been]," Reid said.
"He'll train as hard as he can in the next week and try and get himself back in the senior side.
"It will be [tough] but [sports science director] David Buttifant and the fitness staff have put him on a pretty good program to really work him over in a game-like scenario as much as possible.
"We know you can't get the game style stuff at training but we can try and get that as close to possible for him and he can try and put his hand up for next week."
Dawes trained on Friday after the squad of 25 went through its paces alongside other Pies currently outside the team.
Jackson Paine is Dawes' replacement, which will see the 19-year-old play his sixth senior game after kicking three goals in the VFL last weekend.
Reid said Dawes had remained upbeat around the club despite his dwindling form and criticism of both he and fellow forward Travis Cloke.
Cloke has also been out of touch amidst speculation regarding his future with his contract talks on hold until the season's end.
Reports this week suggested some Blues' players were keen on securing his services, although the club's interest was hosed down by Carlton president Stephen Kernahan who on Wednesday said they thought Cloke would remain a Pie.
Reid said Cloke didn't need to be reminded his teammates wanted him to stay, and hoped this week would prove a turning point for the big goal-kicker form wise.
"I think he knows we all love him and definitely want him here. He's a great player and if he does stay … we're not concentrating on that," he said.
"All we're concentrating on is this week against Essendon and everything else after that doesn't matter."
Andrew Krakouer, Darren Jolly, Nick Maxwell and Jamie Elliott are the Pies' other inclusions, with Cameron Wood, Ben Sinclair and Paul Seedsman omitted, and Jarryd Blair out with a groin.
Sinclair, Seedsman and Josh Thomas trained as part of the squad on Friday while Blair ran laps afterwards.
Reid said Krakouer's return to senior football just six months after a knee reconstruction was inspirational.
"For him to go what he's gone through … all the boys have seen the hard work that he's done," he said.
"He's ready to go and hopefully lights it up tomorrow night."
Sharrod Wellingham trained wearing a glove on the hand he injured against West Coast last Saturday night.
He is expected to play with stitches in his split webbing.
