UPDATE 4:30pm: Collingwood women's football operations manager Meg Hutchins says the Magpies are in full support of the decision to move the AFL Women's season-opener between Collingwood and Carlton to IKON Park.

The Magpies' training ground at the Holden Centre was set to host the clash on Friday 3 February, but rising interest in the opening game of the seaosn has forced the venue change.

"We want as many people as possible to come and witness this historic first match of the AFL Women's competition," Hutchins told Collingwood Media on Monday.

"If that means we have to shift venues, then we'll be fully supportive of the AFL's decision."

While IKON Park can seat 22,000 people, the Olympic Park-based oval has very little seating.

The start time for the season opener has been pushed forward five minutes, to 7.45pm AEDT.

IKON Park is known to most football followers as Princes Park. The ground, on Royal Parade, is home to Carlton's football and administration teams.

"All footy fans who want to see the opening AFLW match will now have the opportunity to do so at Ikon Park," AFL game and market development manager Simon Lethlean said.

"The move ensures no one will miss out as IKON Park offers greater capacity."

As an historic event in Australian sport, Hutchins and the rest of the Collingwood Women's team want as many supporters as possible to come through the gates and enjoy the match in a safe and comfortable manner.

Hutchins says the move also provides greater access for family, friends and those who have supported the team since it's formation in late 2016.

"The players are happy to play at IKON Park," Hutchins said.

"They just want as many of their loved ones to come and support them and witness this historic first step into an AFL competition."
