Collingwood will be one of six clubs competing on the opening night of the inaugural AFLX tournament at Adelaide's Hindmarsh Stadium next month.

The Magpies will take part in the second of six group matches against Adelaide, before finishing the round-robin stage with a match against West Coast.

The three teams will form Pool B, with the highest placed team taking on its counterpart from Pool A (Port Adelaide, Geelong and Fremantle) in the Grand Final.

Built in 1960, Hindmarsh Stadium has never hosted a match under the AFL banner. The venue has hosted Adelaide United's A-League matches since 2003.

It has a current capacity of 16,500.

The matches, which will each consist of two 10-minute halves with a two-minute half time break, will be broadcast on Channel Seven and Fox Footy.

AFLX matches will be played on a rectangular field with dimensions similar to that of a soccer field, with 10 players a team.

It is a seven-a-side format with three players on the bench and there is no limit to rotations.

In order to create a fast and free-flowing game, the last touch out-of-bounds rule has been introduced, while the ball will be kicked in after all scores.

To promote high scoring, the league has also introduced a 10-point super goal for majors kicked from outside the 40m arcs.
