Max-well enough for finals
Nick Maxwell has declared himself a certain starter for Collingwood's first final against West Coast on Saturday week
Maxwell took part in an unofficial 12-a-side scratch match that also involved Heath Shaw, Brent Macaffer, Simon Buckley, John McCarthy, Tom Young, Luke Rounds and Lachlan Keeffe that lasted for about an hour.
While he didn't really test out his bandaged right thumb - and won't do so until at least next week - he took three chest marks and one overhead grab, and kicked a long goal in the second quarter.
"The aim for me as of about three days ago was to go flat out for Monday, and I'll achieve that," he said afterwards.
"This wasn't about testing my thumb. It was about actual fitness base.
"I probably surprised everyone by training when I did on Tuesday but that was more for my mindset to see where it was at should I need to play.
"I never expected to play this week. I said all along I never had a set week; I just wanted to work my way through each day.
"My hand was never up for selection this week - I just wanted to get out there as quick as I could because I know the longer I'm off the track, the harder it's going to be coming back fitness wise.
"I've got not doubt at all I'm right to go [against West Coast]."
Maxwell had his right thumb pinned and plated 18 days ago after breaking it against St Kilda in round 21.
He then had two of the pins removed last week, and will undergo further surgery down the track to remove the rest.
He admitted to protecting his hand on Friday, but said with the work he had completed in the altitude room during his layoff, a training session over the weekend and a full return on Monday, he was confident of facing the Eagles.
"I saw the surgeon today and he gave me the all clear. That was another thing we had to tick before I could even put my hand up for selection," he said.
"Everything is on track so I expect to be 100 per cent for next week."
Coach Mick Malthouse and his panel of assistants watched Friday's hit-out, in which Keeffe looked good and Shaw was a picture of fitness.
Maxwell said he had told the coach he wouldn't put his hand up for the round 24 clash with the Cats earlier this week but that he felt ready to go full throttle on Monday ahead of the first final.
"He's just happy that I'll be right for next week and he won't have to make any decisions after that, knowing that I'll be back with full fitness and I'll be 100 per cent," he said.
Maxwell said the slimmed-down Shaw had impressed with his work rate during his eight-week suspension for gambling, and looked good on Friday after he had the first kick of the game.
"We know what Heater brings to the table and we know how fit he is," he said.
"He's really good [touch wise]. He hasn't lost any touch; he's been over in Arizona and training really hard, and Anthony Rocca trained with him the whole time.
"Anthony said he didn't really have to do anything and Heater drove all the sessions and told him what he was doing."
Meanwhile, the Pies seem set to enter the clash with Geelong unchanged, with Macaffer, Rounds and Buckley - all three emergencies - taking part in the unofficial practice hit-out, which was umpired by development coach Craig McCrae.
Injured premiership backman Nathan Brown was also attendance but didn't play, however he completed kicking drills with Malthouse beforehand.
Suspended midfielder Dale Thomas, who announced a two-year contract extension earlier on Friday, was not present.
