Alex Fasolo was the best player on the field on Friday night, according to both senior coaches.
The small forward received the maximum five votes from both Nathan Buckley and Damien Hardwick in round two’s AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year voting.
A six-goal performance left little room for argument.
Fasolo was electric in the second half as Collingwood fought to overcome a slender Richmond lead.
He kicked five goals after halftime, combining clean hands with a clever goal sense to keep the Magpies in the game.
While the six-goal performance was a career-best for Fasolo, it wasn’t completely foreign for the lively forward to dominate in front of goal on the big stage.
He kicked four majors against Carlton in round 19 last year, while also bursting onto the scene with five goals in just his sixth game in 2011.
The AFLCA votes awarded by the coaches hinted at what could become the changing face of Buckley’s emerging side.
Ben Sinclair was Collingwood’s second-highest voted player with three votes, while Jackson Ramsay and recruit Adam Treloar received one vote each.
While Treloar has dominated his first two games in the Black and White, the nod to Ramsay and Sinclair offers recognition to two young players who have struggled to overcome injury in recent years.
Ramsay’s nine AFL games have been spread across three seasons. The 21-year-old managed just two games in 2015 as he battled to over a shin injury.
However on Friday night the defender had arguably the best game of his career.
He finished with a career-high 23 disposals, trailing just Treloar and captain Scott Pendlebury in Collingwood’s possession leaders.
Sinclair hasn’t had much more luck in recent years. He impressed in rounds one and two last year, before the remainder of his was 2015 was interrupted by hamstring injuries.
After 19 disposals against Sydney in round one, he added another 18 in a pivotal backline role on Friday night.
An impressive game was complete with five tackles and four one-percenters.
Richmond’s Dustin Martin (seven votes), Trent Cotchin (four votes) and Bachar Houli (four votes) rounded out the coaches’ selections for the best players in the thrilling game.
