Outstanding early pressure set up Collingwood’s 44-point victory over Richmond in round three, according to Brad Scott.

Scott, this week’s guest on CTV’s Final Siren show, discussed many facets of the match including the excellent start and the individual performances of players such as Tarkyn Lockyer, Nathan Brown and the Shaw brothers.

But it was the way the team began, and then responded when Richmond had some momentum at the beginning of the third quarter which really pleased Scott.

“We play a pretty high pressure game, so to maintain that for four quarters is always going to be difficult and there are going to be lapses,” said Scott.

“But to the boys’ credit, when challenged they challenged back, so we’ve set a high standard now and we’ve just got to maintain that.”

Scott went on to acknowledge the effort of Heath Shaw in returning to some of his finest form.

“We have really high expectations for Heath, and while he was playing well, he probably wasn’t playing to the level that he’s set for himself.

“Let’s just hope this builds a really good platform for him and he continues on with that for the rest of the year.”

Another player to produce some of his best against the Tigers was Tarkyn Lockyer, whose versatility is something Scott was keen to recognise.

“We were happy to get him (Lockyer) back onto the wing and really use his run. He runs hard into space, he takes a lot of uncontested marks on the back of work rate, so we were pleased to get him up there.

“He can play a variety of roles for us as well. This year already he’s been forward, back and midfield, so Tarkyn doesn’t know where he’s going to be playing next week and neither do we.”

While Collingwood was unable to match Richmond at the clearances, Scott wasn’t about to dismiss the collective ability of the midfield on one down performance.

“The clearances we were down in today, but we were up in those the last two weeks, so it’s not a problem area for us, but to be down in the clearances and still win by that much was pleasing.”
