Scott Pendlebury will be cheering for one thing in the elimination final between West Coast and North Melbourne - pain.

The Magpies will play the winner of Sunday's match after losing their qualifying final clash against Hawthorn on Friday night.

The Collingwood star said he was hopeful the game would be as physically brutal as his own contest on Friday night, knowing the Magpies will have the benefit of two days more rest.

"We need to watch Sunday. It's nice and hot over there so hopefully they belt each other to within inches of their lives and they're really sore," Pendlebury said after the game.

"We've got two extra days recovery so we really have to use the next 48 hours to our advantage."

For Pendlebury, two areas stood out in the 38-point loss - clearances (which Hawthorn won 50-39) and contested possession (where the Hawks had a narrow 167-158 win).

He said the Magpies would have to implement the lessons of Friday night if they were to continue their season beyond next week.

"Before this game we knew last time they smashed us in clearances and contested footy. With Sam Mitchell, if he gets five clearances he is going to hurt you," he said.

"We need to look at a way next week whether it's [Andrew] Swallow or [Luke] Shuey, we will look at trying to limit their prime movers in that area."

The Hawks had 10 scoring shots to five in the first quarter as the Magpies struggled to penetrate the rigid defence of Hawk defender Josh Gibson who repeatedly got a fist to marking contests.

"Gibson is so good at rolling off that we had to play through our small forwards in that second quarter," Pendlebury said.

"It put him in that awkward position where he was half a kick between the play and we were able to get it over to Trav (Cloke) or Kraks (Andrew Krakouer) was able to crumb it at the feet of the big guys," he said.
