Thanks to the Federal Government’s $10 million contribution to the project, our club can realise its vision of establishing the largest grassroots community sporting facility of its kind in Australia.
This is an historic announcement for our club and for the Victorian community.
I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the support of the Federal Government for this project. In particular I would like to acknowledge the contributions of the Minister for Employment Bill Shorten, and the Minster for Sport Kate Lundy.
This project is testament to the Government’s ongoing support for community sport and its commitment to addressing inactivity and obesity in our society.
The new facilities will help to open up the precinct to greater community use and engagement and will have a special emphasis on providing a safe training environment for women, and links to the Tan Track and Yarra River bike trails.
I would also like to acknowledge the work of the Victorian State Government and the Melbourne & Olympic Park Trust in managing and developing the precinct. We appreciate their ongoing support and look forward to working with them further to implement this project.
I have no doubt that it will make a very valuable contribution to the health and wellbeing of our community by educating, inspiring and involving people in physical activity - with a particular focus on women and young people.
I believe all Collingwood members can be enormously proud of our role in this project. It completes the club’s three pillars strategy by linking our Community Centre at Victoria Park; our partnership at the People’s Ground the MCG; and major new community facilities in the heart of Olympic Park, one of the great sporting and event precincts of the world.
On behalf of all Collingwood members and supporters I would again like to thank the Federal Government for its tremendous support for an important and valuable project that will deliver very significant social and economic benefits to the community.
