The midfielder’s hard work during the off-season suggested that season 2009 would take Johnson to heights similar to when he finished second in the Copeland Trophy in 2004.

His form during the NAB Cup was promising and he continued it through the opening two rounds of the season averaging 24 disposals and 6.5 marks per game.

In the early stages of the round three match against Geelong, Johnson suffered a broken leg and missed eight weeks of football.

He made his return through the VFL for three rounds before seeing out the rest of the season in the seniors from round 15.

The midfielder will turn 29 next season and is on the verge of celebrating his 200th AFL game (currently at 185).

2009 highlights
Round 20 v Richmond:  With 27 disposals and one goal, Johnson was a key contributor in the side’s massive win.  He ran with Ben Cousins for 44 minutes and matched him in disposals while adding the one major.

First semi final v Adelaide:  Named in the side’s best, Johnson collected 19 disposals and used it with 90% efficiency (third best for the side).  He also added two goals from the midfield, doubling his season total count.

Paul Hudson: Unfortunately sustained that leg injury early in the year but the way he did the preseason was fantastic and he really challenged himself.  He wouldn’t have come back the player that he did from the injury without a strong preseason.
