Adam Oxley will remain a Collingwood player after being selected with the Magpies’ third pick (No.33 overall) in Monday’s rookie draft.
The selection means the defender extends a career at the club which begun in 2013. At the time, Oxley was a largely unknown prospect from Redland Football Club in Queensland.
He’s since pulled on the Black and White 31 times, producing a 33-touch game against Adelaide in just his fourth appearance, and being awarded two Brownlow votes a fortnight later against Carlton.
Despite showing potential at half back, Oxley has been cursed by injuries in recent times. Hip and back injuries prevented the 25-year-old from playing a senior game in 2017.
“Adam’s shown some promising signs over his career and unfortunately due to injury hasn’t always been able to play to the full potential we know he’s capable of,” Collingwood GM of Football Geoff Walsh said in October.
National Recruiting Manager Derek Hine reiterated the faith in Oxley after selecting him in the the Rookie Draft.
“We all know he can play at the level, it’s just a matter now of him getting that opportunity, through fitness more than anything,”
Oxley’s selection rounds out a trio of selections in the 2017 Rookie Draft. With its two previous selections, the Magpies’ added Flynn Appleby (pick No.6) and Brody Mihocek (pick No.22).
