Profile
Flynn Appleby joins Collingwood after an impressive season with the GWV Rebels in the TAC Cup. The defender was named among the best players 12 times in 18 appearances, while also experiencing a taste of senior football during an outing with North Ballarat in round 17 of the VFL.
Did you know?
- Appleby’s VFL call-up in 2017 came in round 17. The opponent that day? Collingwood. The 18-year-old had 15 disposals, but was unable to help his side overcome an 87-point Magpie victory. Appleby had the herculean task of defending Kayle Kirby, and kept him to just one goal from 14 disposals.
- If Appleby is to debut for Collingwood in 2018 or beyond, he will become the first Flynn to do so in VFL/AFL history.
What they say:
“Had an outstanding season – especially the back half. He finished third in our best and fairest and played in various roles in defence on talls and small quicks. His ability to close down an opponent is outstanding – Kayle Kirby when he played in the VFL, Gryan Miers and even Jarrod Brander. He’s a very good reader of the ball in flight. More than anything he’s got a fantastic attitude to be the best that he can be.” – Phil Partington (GWV Rebels talent manager), Inside Football November 2017.
