In his regular Monday spot on Nova 100’s breakfast show, Nathan Buckley discussed beating the Eagles in extra time, and how important the contribution of the young players with fresh legs was.

Flanked by hosts Hughesy and Kate, Buckley revealed what his message to his teammates was when the side came together between the end of the pulsating final term and the first period of extra time.

“I just dragged them in and said focus on the things that we had all along, which was winning the hard ball, and making sure we got it down to our forward line pretty quickly,” Buckley said.

He also emphasised the side had confidence in its ability to run the game out, and it showed out in the end.

“It was a very tight match. You just knew, even though we had trailed, we just had a little bit more run.

“That’s what you noticed in that extra time, they (the young players) had a bit of extra run in the legs.

“Pendlebury, Swan and O’Bree, who’s not as young, but they all did well for us.”
