The AFLW Sign and Trade Period has now come to a close, with Collingwood securing two new players and with 20 Magpies extending their contracts.
The additions
Day one of the trade period saw Collingwood welcome key forward, Sabrina Frederick. The former Tiger arrived at the Holden Centre in exchange for draft picks 16 and 48, and also saw Maddie Shevlin depart for Punt Road.
Frederick’s AFLW journey began in 2017 having been drafted by Brisbane in the league’s inaugural season. She went on to play 23 games for the Lions across three seasons before making the move to Richmond where she ran out a total of 15 games.
She's signed on until the end of 2023.
Also fresh to the nest is delisted free agent, Alison Downie. The 36-year-old joins Frederick as an AFLW foundation player having begun her career at Carlton in 2017 where she would go on to play out the next five seasons.
The former WNBL player will help fill a gap in the ruck following the retirement of All-Australian, Sharni Norder. Downie recorded 42 hit-outs and also floated forward at times for the Blues last season.
Pies who’ve signed on
A total of 20 Magpies have recommitted for the upcoming season, with 11 of those players also signing on until the end of 2023 including this year’s AFLW Best and Fairest, Brianna Davey and Collingwood’s cross-code star, Ash Brazill.
Joining the pair are other leading talents in Chloe Molloy, Lauren Butler, Sarah Rowe and Tarni Brown.
Several of the Pies young stars including Alana Porter, Jordyn Allen, Ebony O’Dea and Joanna Lin have also penned contract until the end of 2022.
Inaugural Magpies, Ruby Schleicher, Steph Chiocci and Stacey Livingstone have too recommitted to the club. A total of five foundation Magpies now feature on the Pies list for the upcoming season.
Pick Swaps
Collingwood strengthened its hand late in the trade period having been involved in two pick swaps. Collingwood came to a deal with Carlton that saw the Pies obtain picks 29 and 32, in exchange for picks 26 and 55.
Collingwood is set to head into July’s Draft with picks 29, 32, 33 and 62.
