For the first time, a competition-wide Pride Round will be held during round two of the 2021 AFL Women’s season.
The round is an important opportunity to celebrate diversity across the league and is another step closer towards becoming a more inclusive game.
Collingwood AFLW co-captain Brianna Davey says the Pies feel extremely honoured to play in a round that carries an important message within the AFLW community.
“We’re really proud to be part of the pride round as it’s a great opportunity to push messages around gender and acceptance which affects so many people,” Davey said.
“We’re footballers first but we are also role models within the community and I think having a Pride round is a really great way to show sexuality and gender and that you can be whoever you want to be.”
As part of the round, Collingwood players will be wearing Pride rainbow socks for their match against Geelong on Saturday afternoon.

Pride flags will also feature in the cheer squad and will be available to attendees at the gate upon entry.
All AFL Umpires will wear rainbow-coloured sweat bands, while Goal Umpires will use rainbow flags. All 50-metre arc ground markings at Victoria Park will be painted rainbow for the occasion.
Collingwood AFLW defence coach and Stand Up ambassador, Jordan Roughead is eager to see further education put in place in order to eradicate homophobia from sport.
“To see attitudes changing within sport is great. Helping further educate up and coming athletes to change the language and behaviours towards the LGBTQA community is something support strongly,” Roughead said.
Davey says that she hopes the match will encourage broader discussions around acceptance within the community.
“Opportunities like this round helps start conversation and creates awareness of the LGBTQIA community."
“If there’s a little girl or boy watching they can ask Mum, Dad or whoever why we are wearing those colours and they can help spread a broader message of inclusiveness as encouraged by the round.”
Collingwood will host Geelong this Saturday, 3.10pm AEDT at Victoria Park.
