Alan Toovey stepped up in season 2009 to become a permanent fixture in the side, playing in 24 of a possible 25 matches.

The 22-year-old worked on his ability to close down his opponents as well as develop as an offensive threat.

Elevated off the rookie list at the end of 2006, Toovey has now chalked up 41 senior games.

He averaged a career-high in disposals with 13.9 and showed he is capable of collecting midfield-like numbers including notching 20 possessions in the semi-final loss to St Kilda.

Toovey showcased his diversity in defence this year covering opponents including Sam Mitchell, Brendon Goddard and Robert Murphy.

The Magpie defender was exceptional in round 12 against Sydney’s Michael O’Loughlin holding the forward goalless in 61 minutes while finishing on the positive side of the disposal count.

Mark Neeld: I think Alan only missed one game for the year, and when your side has made it all the way through to a preliminary final and you’ve only missed one game that indicates that you’re doing something right. This year Alan showed us all that when he gets the footy, he’s got good pace and is a long kick, which is something we can certainly use to our advantage.

2009 highlights
Round six v North Melbourne: Had a solid game in what was an important win for the club.  Finished the night with 18 possessions and five marks.

Round 15 v Western Bulldogs:  Toovey’s versatile ability was on display under the roof against the Dogs.  After kicking his side’s second goal of the match, and just the fifth for his career, a loud “Toooooooov” descended upon the stadium when the speedy defender ran off Jason Akermanis to deliver a penetrating ball inside 50.
