Collingwood and North Melbourne have agreed to a deal that will see forwards Jaidyn Stephenson and Atu Bosenavulagi move to Arden St in exchange for a package of selections in the 2020 national draft.
Collingwood has received from the Kangaroos picks 26, 33 and 70 in next month’s draft for Stephenson, Bosenavulagi and selection 39.
The move strengthens Collingwood’s hand in a draft recognised for the spread of its tall and small prospects and gives 21 year-old Stephenson the opportunity to re-establish his game.
Stephenson spent three seasons in black and white, kicked 76 goals in 54 matches and won the 2018 Rising Star award. He kicked 38 goals in that first season, a tally that fell to 14 in 2020 due in part to a delayed start to the campaign caused by a bout of glandular fever.
Bosenavulagi spent two seasons with Collingwood for three matches, all played in 2020.
Collingwood list manager, Ned Guy, said the deal reflected the club’s assessment of the strength of the 2020 national draft and the mutual view that a fresh start for Stephenson could help him rediscover his best.
“Firstly, on behalf of Collingwood I would like to thank Jaidyn and Atu for their service.
“Jaidyn lit our attack - and the game - up for a time and we hope he can recapture that form. We wish both players well,” Guy said.
“Secondly, we hold the view that this year’s draft represents an opportunity to bring some key position talent into the program. This deal improves our ability to do that.”
