The AFL Players’ Association has released a statement quashing rumours that not one player from the Collingwood Football Club gave Hawthorn player Lance Franklin a vote for the 2008 AFLPA Most Valuable Player Awards.

This is clearly incorrect as Franklin polled third in votes cast by Collingwood players behind Gary Ablett and Brent Harvey.

Media outlets have also reported that the Collingwood Football Club submitted just 118 votes, whereas most clubs logged around 200 votes or more and that less than half of the clubs players voted.

This is incorrect – 39 Collingwood players cast votes in the 2008 AFLPA MVP Awards. The voting occurred immediately following a club based education workshop where all players were present.

The 118 votes highlighted by various media outlets  represents the number of votes received by the top five place-getters when the votes cast by Collingwood players were tallied – it does NOT reflect the totality of votes cast.
