CTV> John McCarthy speaks to CTV after the game at the airport

18-year old John McCarthy played in his first finals game of his football career last Saturday afternoon against Adelaide.

Speaking with CTV at the airport before the return trip to Melbourne, McCarthy was excited to get his first finals win under his belt after the 31-point win over Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

“It was pretty awesome, the boys were so stoked.  It was great.  First final ever and to come away with a win, I couldn’t ask for anything better.

“I have never played in a single final.  I haven’t had great luck with teams over the years but it’s going to change this year.”

McCarthy acknowledged the fact that finals footy has a different level of intensity then the regular season.

“I was pretty nervous before the game.  When I was out there I probably took a couple of minutes to adjust to the speed and it was another step up from the home and away season.  Everyone kind of finds their feet in the first few minutes and it wasn’t too bad after that.”

Collingwood headed into the main break two goals down and kicked 12 goals to Adelaide’s five in the second half to win.

“Mick said keep your heads up there was another two quarters to go.  None of the boys gave up which was great to see.”

McCarthy played a forward role against his direct opponent, 147-game veteran Graham Johncock.

“It was exciting to line-up against because I have watched him over the last couple of years and it was great.  He kicked a goal early which was a little bit scary but it was good to line-up on an experienced player like him.”
