Even 22 years after Collingwood's breakthrough premiership in 1990, any mention of the late Darren Millane continues to spark emotion in his premiership teammates.

Millane died, aged 26, when he had an accident while drink-driving after the 1991 season.

Former Magpies such as Craig Kelly and Denis Banks open up about Millane during their interviews for The Final Story 1990, the third of this year's three-part series of documentaries on great Grand Finals.

Peter Dickson, the writer and producer of the 1990 episode, said Millane's legacy made the documentary one of the most emotional projects he's been involved in.

The half-dozen players interviewed all describe where they were when they heard about Millane's death.

They also talk about their feelings when they see footage of Millane holding up the ball when the final siren sounded to signal the Magpies' 48-point victory over Essendon, ending a 32-year premiership drought.

Kelly also opens up about the joy he felt when he saw his father parting the crowd to reach him during the celebrations after the Grand Final at Victoria Park.

"I tried to give the euphoria and pain," Dickson said.

The documentary includes interviews with former Essendon star Terry Daniher and former Collingwood star Gavin Brown about the infamous incident in which Daniher king-hit Brown during the brawl at the end of the first quarter.

It looks into the incident in which Collingwood defender Alan Richardson failed his fitness test on the eve of the Grand Final when coach Leigh Matthews barrelled into him after Richardson believed he'd completed the test.

Tony Shaw, Collingwood's captain in 1990, says: "I felt sorry for Richo, but we had to be brutal."

Essendon's story from 1990 is a tale of continuous woe.

It began when Collingwood and West Coast drew in their qualifying final. The rematch pushed the second semi-final back a week, meaning Essendon had three weeks between its final-round match and its first final.

The Bombers players say the last training run before the Grand Final was flat. Then there were all sorts of problems with the bus before and after the parade through the city at lunchtime on Grand Final eve.

That night, after attending a function at Flemington racecourse, the Essendon players got home at 10pm — not ideal preparation before one of the biggest days of their lives.

"Everything went wrong for them," Dickson said.

Kevin Sheedy, Essendon's 1990 coach, is calm but rueful about the Magpies' victory.

He sums it up thus: "Not a great side, Collingwood, but they had the right spirit and they had the desire to win a Grand Final."

The Final Story 1990 will be screened on Channel 7 at 11.30am on Sunday, September 23.
