Last Friday afternoon at Sandown Race Track, Leon Davis met up with one of Collingwood’s biggest fans, Lucas Dumbrell, to experience first-hand the raw energy and excitement of a V8 Supercar.
Lucas is the team principal for Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport, a major player in the V8 Championship. Lucas extended the invitation to Leon on Friday to experience a hot lap with the team’s driver - a 260km/hr thrill ride around the circuit.
Lucas is well-known around Collingwood for his role as ambassador for the Robert Rose Cup - the annual match between Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs honouring club legend, Robert Rose.
Last season Lucas tossed the coin in the middle of Etihad Stadium and went on to present the Cup to winning captain Nick Maxwell. The club looks forward to Lucas’ involvement in 2011 in Round 6 when the Pies host the Dogs again.
Leon was not only with the exhilaration of the riding experience, but in particularly the control and braking power of the car.
“I was wondering at the first turn whether the driver realised the corner was coming up as he seemed to brake so late,” Davis said. “The fitness and concentration these guys must have is amazing - it was intense enough in my one lap, let alone surrounded by 26 other cars flying around right next to you during the race.”
