Collingwood midfielder Dane Swan polled strongly for the third year in a row to run equal fourth in the 2012 Brownlow Medal count, five votes behind winner Jobe Watson.

Swan, the reigning Brownlow Medallist, polled 25 votes in 18 games to tie with Adelaide's Scott Thompson in fourth position.

Essendon skipper Watson was a popular winner with 30 votes. He finished four votes ahead of Hawthorn's Sam Mitchell and Tiger Trent Cotchin.

It was the third successive year that Swan has polled more than 20 votes, having received 24 in 2010, 34 in 2011 and 25 this season.

Swan finished six votes ahead of Dayne Beams, who was the next best placed Magpie with a career-high 19 votes.

Vice-captain Scott Pendlebury, who missed four matches mid-season due to a cracked tibia, ended the count with 15 votes.
