Sidelined forward Anthony Rocca, bothered by an achilles injury, believes he is two to three weeks away from playing any level of competitive football.
The 241-game veteran has had experience managing achilles injuries, undergoing an operation in 2005 which saw him miss the majority of the season.
“It is the other foot. I haven’t felt soreness on the other location since the operation,” Rocca told PieCast on Magpie Radio this week.
“I would love to be out there right now but the fact is I can’t. I have a sore achilles at the moment and it’s not letting up. It’s looking to be two or three more weeks.”
His lengthy absence on the sidelines has allowed Rocca to become an astute observer of the Magpie forward line and its transformation over the course of the season.
“At the start of the year the forward line wasn’t gelling together, but over the last two months it has come back together and our small forwards are performing.”
Rocca is full of praise for his teammate and 2007 Copeland Trophy medalist Travis Cloke.
“It wasn’t going to take Trav to long to get back to his best. It’s all about work rate and getting in the right position for Trav.
“Over the last two years I have been getting the second best defender because Trav has been playing too good.”
He believes a reason for part of the success that Cloke and the rest of the Magpie forwards are currently enjoying is due to the game plan the midfielders have enacted over the last two months.
“Sometimes I get really frustrated when they (midfielders) get a free kick out of the middle and they go wide straight away. I know it makes the forwards irate at times.
"We have to put the ball in there quicker which is what we have been doing over the last six weeks.”
