Malthouse adamant poor kicking isn't due to speed
Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse doesn't believe the increasing speed of the game is affecting the accuracy of kicks for goal
For the second week running, the Magpies were wasteful in attack, with their final score 17.21 (123) coming after a particularly wayward third quarter.
Last week against St Kilda they kicked a paltry 4.17 for the game and were kept goalless in the second half.
"We're missing too many; there's no question of that," Malthouse said after Saturday night's clash with Hawthorn.
"No one means to miss. You keep practising.
"No one is rushed, you get 30 seconds. I wouldn't have thought [the speed contributed]."
Their inaccuracy didn't affect the result with the Pies notching a 64-point win after applying strong pressure on Hawthorn players and landing a huge tackle count.
Malthouse said it was their best performance for the season and came as a result of an even effort from the entire team.
"We had a pretty good contribution across the board. I don't think it was one division," he said.
"I don't think you can beat Hawthorn or St Kilda or the Dogs … you can't win those games unless you have pretty good contributions.
"I haven't seen the video of the game and I haven't analysed the game but I would be very surprised if we didn't just have more than the senior players playing well."
The side's youngsters showed promise with Steele Sidebottom racking up 27 disposals, Dayne Beams 25 and Sharrod Wellingham 20, with five clearances.
Malthouse said he was pleased with the development of his younger brigade.
"They're young blokes. Very, very rarely do kids at this level not have some upside," he said.
"Wellingham is a rookie who came onto our list and has had a gradual improvement throughout his career and is certainly better than what he was last year.
"Sidebottom is a bit more mature than last year. Beams is the same.
"They're the pleasing things and we've got another couple of kids that I think will feature in the next half a dozen weeks."
Malthouse himself was in the media this week as the fallout from his quarter-time contretemps with Saint Stephen Milne from last Friday night was scrutinised.
He said the incident had not been distracting in the lead up to the game.
"You just roll with the punches."
