Collingwood is poised to strengthen its hand in the national draft by securing a first round pick from West Coast in exchange for midfielder Sharrod Wellingham.

With the Eagles agreeing to give over pick 17 for the 24 year-old former rookie, the Magpies will have in their possession two selections inside the top 20 for the first time since 2006.

As the draft order sits, Collingwood will have selections 17 and 18 to work with in the first round of draft, which will be held on the Gold Coast on November 22.

Wellingham played 92 games in black and white over the course of five seasons at the Westpac Centre. He was a member of the 2010 premiership side and, in all, played in three grand finals.

Recruited from the Perth football club in the rookie draft of 2007, Wellingham announced last week that he was keen to return to his home state of Western Australia and continue his career with the Eagles.

“We wish Sharrod well. He played some good football for the club and shared in a premiership, which is a fine achievement, ” Collingwood’s National Recruiting Manager, Derek Hine, said.

“Equally, we’re very pleased to have a stronger presence in the national draft. It’s been some time since we’ve had this sort of hand to work with. We’ve got two first round picks on the table.”
