Hamstring problems saw Heath Shaw’s 2009 season get off to a slow start managing only two matches from the first seven rounds.

Once fit the running defender became a staple in the back six for the rest of the season.

In his fifth season at the club since arriving via pick 48 overall (father-son selection) in the 2003 AFL draft, Shaw produced career-best numbers averaging 23 disposals per game.

Adding a string to his bow this season, Shaw’s work rate on the field was impressive, collecting 167 running bounces for the year which led the league.

His ability to move the ball quickly out of defence forced his opponents to play accountable football.

Shaw’s best patch of football emerged during the finals which was acknowledged by the coaching staff with the Bob Rose Trophy (tied with Nick Maxwell).

Mark Neeld: Heath was third in the best and fairest. He worked very hard over the pre-season and that was reflected in his very consistent form week in, week out.  He formed part of what was a pretty good group in the back half.

2009 highlights
