Watch Lou Richards and Eddie McGuire discuss the new statue

A key pillar of Collingwood’s renowned history, Magpie legend Lou Richards will forever be remembered for his efforts, both on and off the field, with the announcement of a statue to be erected in his honour.

Announced by club president Eddie McGuire, the statue of Richards will be sculpted over the next year and will be located outside the Westpac Centre.

“I feel very honoured about it”, Richards told CTV.

“It’s a complete surprise and I suppose that’s the best way to get it.

“It is a big thrill for me and I will try and look my best.”

McGuire was full of praise for the 250-game former captain, stating that Richards paved the way for current day media.

“I just think it’s fantastic for the man who has single-handedly done more for football and sports entertainment, for every player who has had a commercial contract or who has ever hosted a sportsman night, to any person who has been on television or radio in the last 30 years,” McGuire told CTV in front of the Bob Rose statue.

“It all goes back to Lou Richards.  What a fitting way to put him up forever here at the home of sports entertainment.

“Lou Richards will forever live on in Collingwood hearts.”
