Surgery to repair Collingwood midfielder Luke Ball’s torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee was successful.

Ball underwent the knee reconstruction on Tuesday afternoon, after sustaining the injury in the first half of Collingwood’s round three loss to Carlton last Friday night.

Ball will appear on The Club on Fox Footy at 9pm this evening.

Collingwood director of football Geoff Walsh said the surgeon was happy with how the procedure went, and that Ball is set to make a full recovery.

“Luke had the surgery on Tuesday afternoon and the surgeon explained to us that it went as well as it possibly could have,” Walsh said.

“Given Luke had traditional reconstructive surgery he will likely miss the remainder of the 2012 season, however he is in excellent spirits and determined to make a meaningful contribution to the side next year.

“He’s the consummate professional and a leader of our football club, and we know he will do everything possible to get himself back to full fitness, with the full support of the club.”

Ball was discharged from hospital on Wednesday morning, and will spend about a week resting at home before embarking on his rehabilitation program.

The 27-year-old has played 193 career matches, including 51 for the Magpies since crossing from St Kilda at the end of 2009.

Ball was part of Collingwood’s Grand Final triumph against his old side in 2010, and has two top-five finishes in the best-and-fairest to show for his first two seasons in black and white stripes.

Despite getting injured early in the round three clash, Ball is equal first at the club in 2012 for tackles along with Scott Pendlebury (17) and third for clearances (12), meaning his presence and hardness in the midfield will be missed.
