The event, which took place last week, is the final component to the “10 experiences” multicultural program running at the club. The program uses Australian football to further engage and integrate newly arrived migrants and refugees into the community.
The round robin event hosted seven teams (girls and boys) all playing for a spot in the state final. The matches were extremely competitive with both boys’ preliminary finals decided by less than six points (Preston & Lalor Primary School)
In the end Mooroopna Primary School defeated St. Mary’s Primary School Greensborough in the boy’s final by four goals. In the girl’s competition, Preston Primary School came away with a one goal victory over Mooroopna Primary School.
These schools will now play in the State Multicultural Cup Finals on the December 1 at Visy Park, competing against other schools from Carlton, Hawthorn, Western Bulldogs and Richmond F.C’s Multicultural Programs.
Jy Simpkin from Mooroopna Primary School in the Goulbern Valley was awarded the Harry O’Brien Medal for being the fairest and best player in the tournament - Jy also played in this year’s u/12 Victorian School boy’s team.
A special thank you to the Goulbern Valley’s Guthrie Street Primary School and Mooroopna Primary school who participated in the Collingwood Football Club’s Regional Multicultural Schools Football Program and commuted via bus to Melbourne to take part in the tournament.
