> Watch 1958 premiership defender Mike Delanty discuss the current side during the club's training session in Sorrento.

Collingwood’s 1958 premiership centre-half back Mike Delanty believes that the current Magpie side would comprehensively beat the team that won the club’s 13th flag.

Delanty, who spoke to CTV on Monday at the Sorrento Football Ground, believes a combination of skill and the change in game style would favour Mick Malthouse’s Magpies.

“I think this side here would have absolutely slaughtered us,” Delanty said on Monday.??

“I think a few of them would have been on the ground beforehand (but they would have won).

“We had some very good players.  I don’t know how we would fit in with today.  We used to play a rugged man-on-man game and now they tend to run off each other.”

Delanty believes the side has the potential to duplicate the efforts of the two most recent Collingwood premiership sides.??

“I am hoping they can do the same as they did in 1990.  We won in 1958, it took them 32 years to win another one, and now 1990 is a long time to go between drinks.

“This side is showing the potential to do what the 1990 side did.”??

The former Magpie highlighted the vast differences between what was required of a modern-day footballer compared to a player of his era.

“I live in Blairgowrie and when I heard that the Pies were coming down here I thought it would be a good time to see how they train compared to the two days when we used to train.

“We trained on the Tuesday and Thursday and then played on the Saturday and that was it.”
