Collingwood midfielder Dayne Beams will have arthroscopic surgery on a hip that is expected to sideline him for much of the rest of the season.
After a round table discussion today between Beams, the Collingwood medical staff and coaches it was agreed that Beams will have surgery in the coming days for an injury he has carried for a number of weeks.
The decision to operate now, while likely to keep the 29 year-old out of action for up to three months, may enable him to play again in 2019.
“Dayne has been battling with the injury for a number of weeks and it has reached the stage where it is affecting his ability to train, to run out games and his form generally,” Collingwood GM of Football, Geoff Walsh, said.
“Dayne saw a surgeon a couple of weeks ago. It was agreed then to push on but it has since become clear that the situation isn’t helping Dayne perform as he and we would like.
“The hope is that with a general clean up and a smooth rehabilitation he will have the time to return late in the season.”
Beams made his way back to Collingwood at the end of last season after four seasons with Brisbane. He won Collingwood’s best and fairest award, the Copeland Trophy, in 2012 and was a member of the club’s 2010 premiership side. He won All-Australian honours in 2012 and won Brisbane’s best and fairest award in 2015.
He has played nine of Collingwood’s 11 matches in 2019.
