The 2008 NAB AFL Draft Camp begins on Wednesday, October 1 at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra and concludes on Friday, October 3.

75 potential AFL players will participate in the three day camp and will engage in activities that test their physical and mental strengths and weaknesses.

The players will conduct their trials in front of the 16 AFL clubs.

Collingwood has sent a team to the nation's Capital consisting of the head coach, various assistant coaches, recruitment staff, team physchologist and the chief of football.

From last year’s draft camp, midfielder John McCarthy who played six games of senior football in 2008 was selected with the Magpies' 31st pick.

Collingwood’s director of football, Geoff Walsh, spoke to collingwoodfc.com.au before the camp commenced.

“We will be interviewing 20 to 30 potential draftees to help fill some of our weaknesses we think need to be addressed,” Walsh said.

“Our team will observe the physical and mental tests that take place to determine who we think is a viable player for our team.

“Obviously we have done a bit of research before the draft camp so this week will simply give us more one on one time with the kids.”

The first day of camp will consist of a fitness assessment (height/weight, skin folds, arm length, hand span) and psychomotor tests (reaction time, decision making, peripheral awareness).

Thursday the players will show off their speed (sprints and shuttle run) and vertical leap.

The final day of camp consists of a 3km time-trial and an open field skills session.

In this year’s draft, the Magpies have picks 11, 29, 45, 61 and 77.  The pick number is subject to change depending on what occurs during trade week.

Victoria leads the state by state breakdown with 37 players invited followed by South Australia with 14, Western Australia with 13, Tasmania with five, the Northern Territory with three, New South Wales with two and one from Queensland.
