Nick Maxwell will become the sixth player in Collingwood history to captain the club in 100 games when he leads his side out onto ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.

Maxwell has led the Magpies on 98 occasions since assuming the mantle in December 2008.

He led the Magpies once in 2007 (against Essendon in round 16) when Nathan Buckley and James Clement were injured.

The five players to have led the club in 100 or more games are Nathan Buckley (161 games between 1998* and 2007), Syd Coventry (153 games between 1925 and 1934), Tony Shaw (123 games between 1987 and 1993), Wayne Richardson (116 games between 1970 and 1975) and Phonse Kyne (105 games between 1938 and 1950).

Maxwell is currently level with Gavin Brown (1993*-1998) on 99.

He has led the side to victory on 75 occasions. He has also been skipper in 11 finals and most famously the two Grand Finals in 2010.

After the first Grand Final ended in an epic draw with St Kilda, Maxwell told Channel Seven’s Matthew Richardson :

“Oh mate, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen 44 guys go to war like we just did then. It was amazing.

“It’s probably going to take this for the AFL to change the rules, it’s an absolute joke. There’s no way it should be decided after another game. Guys come here for a win or loss and that’s what we should be leaving with.

“We’ll look forward to next week, mate, and use the hurt, feel it now – we let a lead go and we’ll come back next week.”

Maxwell has played a total of 193 senior games since debuting against Adelaide in round nine, 2004.

He is one of only 10** men to have captained Collingwood to a premiership.

The 30-year-old took over Nathan Buckley’s No. 5 jumper when the then-captain retired at the end of 2007, just 12 months before Maxwell himself became Collingwood’s 45th captain.

In the five seasons since he was anointed skipper, Maxwell has been named in the All-Australian team (2009), finished second (2009), fifth (2012) and seventh (2010) in the Copeland Trophy and tied for two Bob Rose Awards (2009 and 2010) as the side's best player during the finals.

* Gavin Brown and Nathan Buckley were stand-in captains in 1993 and 1998 respectively.
**Jock McHale began 1917 as captain but Percy Wilson took over during the season.
