Intra-club report: Pies step up a gear
The performances of several youngsters and those on the comeback trail from injury were the big positives to arise from Collingwood’s intra-club match on Friday morning according to assistant coach Robert Harvey.
The match, the second of its kind for the summer, was played in warm conditions at Victoria Park on a day which the mercury tipped 31-degrees.
But instead of avoiding the heat, the Magpies sought to embrace it with an eye to simulating the hot conditions that they are likely to experience when they play West Coast at Patersons Stadium next Sunday.
“We deliberately played at this time because it’s something that we may face potentially next week,” assistant coach Robert Harvey told collingwoodfc.com.au after the match.
“There was a bit more spice in it this week with more intensity. I think it was just a bit sharper all round which was probably expected a little bit as we’re closer to the season.
“I just think that it was a pretty good hitout in tough conditions and we stepped it up a bit today.”
Those to step things up included key forward Quinten Lynch who booted four goals, including three in the first quarter.
Lynch, who played on the opposite team to established full forward Travis Cloke, took stints in the ruck but spent the majority of the morning inside 50 where his ability to make space and catch his opponents out on the lead caught the eye.
The Collingwood coaching hierarchy would have been impressed by the returns of Alex Fasolo and Tyson Goldsack who made their first appearances of the pre-season on Friday morning.
Fasolo looked particularly sharp, pushing a little deeper up the field than what he has historically.
He was involved in several impressive passages of play where his composure and ability to choose the right option when in possession marked him as one of the best afield.
Goldsack began to look more and more comfortable as the match wore on and was rewarded for his hard work with a goal from more than 50m out at the beginning of the final quarter.
The pair was singled out by Harvey after the match as two of the biggest positives from the day, along with the efforts of two recruits who are yet to debut in the black and white.
“I think everyone had their moments, particularly a few of the young guys.
“It was good to see Adam Oxley do well, and Ben Kennedy was pretty good.
“Alex Fasolo and Tyson Goldsack coming back from injury were really good as well.
“There was a lot to like about everything we saw so now we’ve got to keep chipping away and getting better.”
The intra-club contest was be the last of its kind for 2013 with the Magpies now preparing for two NAB Cup games in the space of six days against West Coast and Brisbane.
