Fremantle dominated the coaches’ votes with two players, Garrick Ibbotson and Michael Walters, receiving nine votes apiece.
Defenders Paul Duffield and Luke McPharlin were also rewarded for their performances with three votes.
McPharlin, in particular, shone for his role in blanketing Collingwood powerhouse Travis Cloke. The key forward entered the game ranked second in the Coleman Medal with 22 goals but was instead held to four behinds from five marks – his lowest return of the season.
Vote for your best players in Collingwood's loss to Fremantle as a part of the Magpie Army Player of the Year Award.
Two Magpies, Steele Sidebottom and Dane Swan, each earned two votes for their consistency over four quarters.
On a night when the team struggled to maintain any consistency, the performances of the midfield pair stood out.
With 33 possessions, Sidebottom topped Collingwood’s disposal tally for the second time in three weeks. As always, he managed to push forward to get his team on the scoreboard with only three minutes remaining in the first quarter.
He also managed seven clearances and 16 contested possessions from 89 per cent game time.
Swan, too, was prolific in gathering 27 possessions but it was his work inside 50 that helped turn the game in Collingwood’s favour during the third quarter.
Trailing by six goals at half time, Buckley moved Swan to full forward at the start of the term and his strength and footy smarts helped him win or neutralise several one-on-one contests and bring his teammates into the game.
The third and final Magpie to poll a vote was Sam Dwyer. The story of the 26-year-old’s rise from Port Melbourne to Collingwood has been oft told so far this year and his 25 possessions, two goals and four inside 50s against the Dockers mean that he won’t be averting any attention in the coming weeks.
On the club leaderboard, there is no change to the status quo after seven rounds. Scott Pendlebury, Cloke and Sidebottom form the top three, while Swan now sidles into equal fifth alongside Heath Shaw on eight votes.
Adelaide dynamo Patrick Dangerfield leads the competition alongside Essendon skipper Jobe Watson with 35 votes, only four ahead of Gold Coast’s Gary Ablett.
