Collingwood’s resounding 79-point triumph over Essendon has seen the side sweep the board in the latest round of AFLCA Champion Player of the Year voting.
Emphasising the complete nature of the Black and Whites display, seven Magpies featured among the votes awarded by competing coaches Nathan Buckley and James Hird, with Steele Sidebottom earning best on ground honours.
Receiving eight votes, Sidebottom’s 30 possession display showcased the qualities which have seen the 22-year old become one of the most valuable members of the Collingwood side.
Demonstrating his trademark vision and poise, Sidebottom’s inquisitive on-field presence once again came to the fore as he continued his late season surge of form.
Sidebottom narrowly edged out Dane Swan for lead vote honours after the Brownlow Medallist revelled in the damp conditions at the MCG, his 30 disposals including three goal assists.
Harry O’Brien was awarded six votes for a formidable display in his now bespoke defensive wingman role, breaking lines with relative ease in a daring display of attacking confidence and flair.
Arguably Collingwood’s most consistent performer across the season thus far, Scott Pendlebury produced a customarily composed display on route to collecting five votes, the remarkable ease with which he jinked past opponents and found solace amidst the chaos testament to his quality.
With 27 disposals, including nine contested possessions and three clearances, Pendlebury returned to the top five on the overall AFLCA Champion Player of the Year leader board, sitting one vote shy of Sydney’s Daniel Hannebery, who currently occupies third place.
Nathan Brown (two), Luke Ball (one) and Travis Cloke (one) rounded out the voting as the Magpies finally unveiled its barely revealed potential to the competition.
