Collingwood forward Alex Fasolo will have surgery this week after scans on Monday revealed a fracture of the navicular bone in his right foot. The 20 year-old West Australian is expected to be have an extended period on the sidelines ahead of him.

Equal second in Collingwood’s goal kicking award in 2012, with 28.20, Fasolo experienced pain in his foot while training and reported it thinking the episode to be nothing more than a moment of mild discomfort.

Collingwood director of football, Geoff Walsh, said the precautionary scans which followed instead found a crack of the bone at the top of Fasolo’s foot.

“Unfortunately, the news wasn’t good and Alex will have surgery in the next couple of days,” Walsh said.

“Given the nature of the injury it’s likely that he will miss most, if not all, of the rest of the season. We’re sure Alex will do everything right in terms of his rehabilitation which should give  him some hope for 2013 but there can be no rush with an injury of this kind.”

Fasolo endured an injury-riddled pre-season that did not allow him to begin playing senior football until round three, against Hawthorn, as a substitute. He played the following two matches before being demoted to the VFL where he distinguished himself with a fine performance and a report for rough conduct, for which he was suspended for one match. As such, he was unavailable to play against Fremantle last Saturday night.

Fasolo has played 40 matches for Collingwood and kicked 45 goals in his time at the Westpac Centre. He speaks of his injury this evening on the latest episode of The Club (Fox Footy, 8.30pm).
