Collingwood player Marley Williams was convicted in the Albany District Court on Thursday of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.

The club’s response is as follows:

"The Collingwood Football Club does not condone violence of any description. Marley Williams was sanctioned by the club in early 2013, shortly after the regrettable incident for which he has been convicted occurred.

"As part of his club imposed sanction Marley worked with the Salvation Army for 10 weeks, work he continues to carry out as part of a significant personal transformation over the past year. Marley looks back on the events of December 2012 with deep regret and will now pay a further price for his actions.

“The club does not wish to pre-empt in any way the sentencing process which is scheduled to take place in April, at which time the unusual circumstances of the offence and the personal circumstances of Marley will be taken into account.

“The club will continue to support and guide Marley’s development as a young man and footballer.”

There will be no further comment on the matter.
