Selection: Pies add four to squad
Key forward Jesse White is poised to make an immediate return to senior action after he was named in an extended 25-man squad to face the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
White, 26, was withdrawn from the team selected to play Melbourne on Monday after failing to overcome the lingering effects of a finger injury sustained against St Kilda in the previous round.
The former Sydney Swan will likely slot straight back into the Magpie forward line, assuming his customary place alongside fellow key target Travis Cloke after Tyson Goldsack was ruled out for this weekend’s match with knee soreness.
Ranking first among forwards for tackles inside 50 this season, Goldsack’s defensive prowess has seen him emerge as one of the leading pressure players in the competition, with his ferocious attack on the ball earning widespread plaudits.
The 27-year old is Collingwood’s sole omission, with Ben Kennedy, Taylor Adams and Tim Broomhead joining White as potential inclusions when the Magpies vie for the Robert Rose Cup.
Having been unsighted at AFL level since featuring against Carlton in round seven, Kennedy has diligently compiled a compelling case for his return to senior football, averaging 29.3 disposals per game, including over 15 contested possessions and nine clearances, during his last three outings.
Kennedy’s performance in the VFL Magpies hard-fought triumph over Casey last weekend earned him praise from Development Manager Craig McRae, who lauded his effort in trying conditions.
2014 recruit Adams meanwhile once again remains on the cusp of senior selection after he was named as an emergency for the Queen’s Birthday match.
Adams has oscillated between the club’s VFL and AFL sides this season, a victim of the impressive midfield depth which has underpinned an impressive run of form spurring Collingwood to victories in seven of its last eight matches.
A potential senior debut remains on the cards for Broomhead, who has retained his place in the extended side by virtue of another commendable display at VFL level.
Averaging 22 disposals, including nine contested possessions, in five matches this year, Broomhead has further burnished his already accomplished skill set with the cultivation of an improved inside presence at contests, presaging a potential future in the midfield.
