Voting for the Magpie Army Player of the Year Award is underway for 2015.
Collingwood Media looks at the performances of some of the players who were among the best in Thursday night’s narrow loss to ladder-leaders Fremantle at Domain Stadium.
Collingwood’s top performers
10. Scott Pendlebury
Statistics: 14 kicks, 11 handballs, 25 disposals, 8 clearances, 6 tackles.
Pendlebury led from the front as the Magpies set the tone of the game for the night with an impressive first quarter. The skipper had 11 first quarter possessions, six of which were contested. This number had reached 17 at half time as the visitors held a narrow lead. While Pendlebury didn’t stand alongside Fremantle star Nat Fyfe, comparisons between the two tall midfielders were rife. Fyfe had more disposals, but Pendlebury’s disposal efficiency was higher and his had six tackles to Fyfe’s two.
36. Dane Swan
Statistics: 16 kicks, 10 handballs, 26 disposals, 14 contested possessions, 10 clearances.
Swan was at his hard-working best in the closely-contested contest at Domain Stadium. He was often seen getting first hands on the footy and linking up with the likes of Pendlebury, Adams and Jack Crisp. He seemed effortlessly able to read the ball from the ruckman’s hand, whether it be Jarrod Witts or his Fremantle counterpart Aaron Sandilands. Ten clearances played a big factor in Collingwood having just three less inside 50s than the highly-favoured Dockers.
18. Travis Varcoe
Statistics: 9 kicks, 6 handballs, 15 disposals, 4 rebound 50s, 8 tackles.
Varcoe ensured his 150th AFL game was a memorable one. Recognised during the week as the ‘winningest’ player in the league, Varcoe’s mindset and work rate rubs off on his teammates. Although his milestone game ended in defeat, the 27-year-old impressed with run and carry from half back. He had a team-high four rebound 50s and applied enormous pressure on his Fremantle opponents with eight tackles.
13. Taylor Adams
Statistics: 16 kicks, 13 handballs, 29 disposals, 6 marks, 4 clearances.
Adams’ performance proved symbolic of Collingwood’s turnaround from the last time the two sides met. He had 15 disposals in his Collingwood debut in round one last as the Magpies lost to the Dockers’ by 70 points. 468 days later, Adams went one disposal shy of doubling this total. His 29-disposal game included nine contested possessions and four rebound 50s.
