Collingwood has locked in its 2020 coaching panel with Matthew Boyd and Garry Hocking accepting new roles and former Cat Scott Selwood joining the panel.
Collingwood academy coach and former premiership Bulldog, Matthew Boyd, will succeed the recently departed Justin Longmuir as backline and team defence coach.
Boyd arrived at Collingwood at the conclusion of the 2017 season and has since spent his time helping to bring through Collingwood’s younger players and working with the VFL program.
Collingwood GM Football Geoff Walsh said Boyd’s new role came off the back of an impressive first two years at the club.
“Matthew’s growth as a coach at Collingwood has been immeasurable, he has genuine care for his colleagues and players and we see him as a natural fit for the assistant coach role,” Walsh said
“We’re proud to see him develop within our coaching ranks and we expect him to add great value to Nathan’s senior coaching group.”
Hocking will move into the position of VFL senior coach following the departure of Jared Rivers in September.
A four-time All Australian and Carji Greeves medallist, Hocking’s move into coaching came after playing 274 games for Geelong.
With experience coaching in the WAFL (Peel Thunder), TAC Cup (Geelong Falcons), SANFL (Port Adelaide and South Adelaide) and at Port Adelaide, Hocking began at Collingwood in 2017 as the assistant coach for stoppages.
“Jared was committed to building a fantastic VFL program at the club and we thank him for his time and wish him well for the next chapter,” Walsh said.
“Garry’s vast and varied playing and coaching resume makes him a great fit for our VFL program as we have no doubt that the team will be able to learn a lot from him.
“In just two years at the club, Garry’s approach to coaching has made him very popular with our players and staff alike and we look forward to him working with players on our AFL and VFL lists.”
The club’s development coaching ranks will be bolstered with the addition of Selwood coming in as a development coach.
Selwood will turn his attention to coaching in 2020 after playing 169 games over 12 seasons with West Coast Eagles and Geelong.
“Scott has a reputation for being a great clubman and someone who is dedicated to helping develop those around him,” Walsh said.
“As an academy coach, Scott will be able to focus his energy on helping our emerging talent grow as footballers and as people.
“With Scott’s appointment, our coaching panel is finalised and we’re confident we have a great mix of experience and skills to work with our players in 2020.”
