Cameron Wood was a huge positive to emerge from Sunday’s 10-point loss to the Bulldogs at Telstra Dome.
The 21-year-old ruckman was playing his first game in the seniors since round eight, having spent recent weeks representing Collingwood’s VFL team.
With Josh Fraser out injured, Wood was recalled and finished the match with 10 possessions, 12 hitouts and two goals in an encouraging display Mick Malthouse described as “very good”.
Making his contribution even more significant was the fact the Magpies lost forwards Ben Reid and Anthony Rocca to injury during the game, so Wood and fellow ruckman Chris Bryan were forced to spend time rotating between the forward line and the ruck.
Wood led and marked strongly and looked every bit capable of spending more time as a forward target as his career progresses.
“With Reidy (Ben Reid) going down, myself and big bear (Chris Bryan) had to swap as forwards, and it was good,” Wood told CTV after the match.
“I think Chris kicked a goal and I kicked a couple so it was good to kick a few goals between us. Hudson and Minson are a pretty decent ruck combo as well.
“Hudson gets after the ball and gets a few clearances himself, so guess we were trying to nullify that ourselves, so it was good from that perspective to not let them dictate the game.”
Having played the first eight matches of the season after being traded from Brisbane for the 14th pick at the end of 2007, Wood admitted to being disappointed at being dropped, but knows what areas of his game he needs to work on to become an established senior player.
“It was disappointing getting dropped, but it was probably for the best in the long run, so now I can hopefully hold my spot back in the seniors, working on my follow up stuff from contests and DI’s (desire indicators) are a big factor here at the club, so those two things are probably the most important.”
