On Wednesday several Collingwood players attended the launch of Make-A-Wish Australia’s ‘One Big Money Walk for Wishes’ event.

The event, hosted by the Make-A-Wish Portland Volunteer Branch, is now in its fifth year and raises funds for the national non-profit organisation by orchestrating a walk from Melbourne to Portland, held over five days.

Prized Collingwood players, including team captain and Make-A-Wish Ambassador, Nick Maxwell, travelled to Brooklyn to mark the start of the event, which this year is expected to raise $10,000.

“It is great to have the support of Nick (Maxwell) and the Collingwood Football Club,” CEO Vici Funnell of Make-A-Wish said of Collingwood’s involvement.

“We understand the great demand there is for their time, so to have them travel across town, first thing in the morning, to show their support for the work of Make-A-Wish is truly fantastic.

“The Walk for Wishes event has been a great initiative and real success for the Portland Branch for the last four years and we hope that 2011 is the same.”

Since its inception in 1985, Make-A-Wish Australia has granted more than 6,700 cherished Wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. The vision remains that all Australians have the opportunity to share the power of a Wish.
