Imagine pulling on the guernsey of the team you’ve viewed as a rival your entire life.
The thought became a reality for 3AW journalist and life-long Carlton fan Sam McClure on Tuesday.
Broadcasting the Geelong v Melbourne game from Simmonds Stadium on Sunday, McClure and fellow commentator Matthew Richardson were certain the Cats would defeat the Demons.
So certain in fact that McClure declared that if Melbourne won, he would wear a Collingwood guernsey to work every Sunday for the rest of the season.
Melbourne won, and two days later it was time for the man nicknamed ‘Scoop’ to pay.
Waiting for a routine press conference to begin at the Westpac Centre, he was greeted by none other than Nathan Buckley, complete with a personalised Collingwood guernsey ready to hand over to the journo.
“I’m a Carlton man unfortunately. I’m not sure how my family is going to feel about this,” McClure told Collingwood Media.
“It’s a good fit. Bucks presented it, which was nice of him. But I’m not happy.”
The 3AW stats man was quick to put the black and white stripes to good use, donning the guernsey and opening the press conference with a question for Buckley.
He says his 3AW comrades won’t be letting him forget to live up to his end of the bargain.
“I’ve got Richo and Lingy (Cameron Ling), Mick Warner and my producer Craig who will be in there every Sunday.
“Every Sunday I’ll be wearing the Collingwood jumper, and it just so happens that this Sunday is a Carlton game.”
