The news of Dale Thomas and Dayne Beams’ extended layoffs has been tempered slightly by the imminent return of big man Lachlan Keeffe and the first sighting of prized draft pick Brodie Grundy.

Neither Keeffe nor Grundy has played any football since last year as a result of knee and back injuries but both are set to take on Essendon in the VFL this Saturday.

Keeffe ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament against Adelaide in round nine last season.

The 23-year-old had been one of Collingwood’s most improved players to that stage of the year having held down centre half back with aplomb while more experienced teammates were sidelined.

He will return almost 12 months to the day since he was carted off AAMI Stadium on a stretcher.

“(I’ve had) a few niggles along the way but I think that’s just normal for someone coming back from a knee reconstruction,” Keeffe told The Club last week.

“Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I can get the training consistency. I’ve got about four to five weeks now of full sessions and it’s almost not about the knee it’s about when I can actually play again.

“I know that confidence comes even through four weeks of training and then obviously VFL, trying to put my hand up through form in that form of the game and then fingers crossed for later on in the season.”

For Grundy, his VFL debut marks the end of a long and arduous recovery from the back injury that has restricted him since arriving at the club via South Australia in last year’s National Draft.

The 202cm ruckman was Collingwood’s first selection (No. 18) overall last December but many draft experts believed that he was potentially one of the top three players available.

He has now been in full training for over a month and is set to debut for a VFL team that is high on confidence after beating the undefeated Geelong by 13-points on Saturday.

In other injury news, Marty Clarke is available again after missing last week’s match with illness. Tyson Goldsack (hip) and Clinton Young (hamstring) remain on the sidelines alongside Alex Fasolo (foot) and Alan Toovey (knee).
