Brodie Grundy is a tall man who’s had a short career to date.
The 203cm ruckman has played 54 games in his four years on Collingwood’s list.
The last two in particular have indicated that the 22-year-old’s career may just be a long and successful one.
Of all Collingwood players, it is Grundy who been the most impressive in the Magpies past two wins against Fremantle and Carlton.
The ruckman has totalled 34 disposals, 46 hit-outs, eight marks and two goals playing as Collingwood’s primary ruckman.
According to Nathan Buckley, and opposition coaches Ross Lyon and Brendon Bolton, this influence has been greater than any other Magpie.
Grundy swept the voting in the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year award two weeks ago, claiming a maximum ten votes in his side’s 48-point win over the Dockers.
A week later, his week once again appeared in the voting. There was no chance of surpassing a dominant Scott Pendlebury, but Grundy received the third most votes (four), behind his captain and Ben Sinclair.
Collectively, his 14 votes in the past two weeks is more than Pendlebury (12), Adam Treloar (eight) and any other teammate.
While the South Australian was aerially superior against Fremantle, a more rounded game followed against the Blues.
A third two-goal haul of the season showed his ability to be a threat inside forward 50. However while Grundy welcomes the hard work, he is clear on where he prefers to play.
“I’ve watched countless interviews with other ruckman in the competition and they all talk about how they like to be the workhorse,” Grundy told the media after the Fremantle game.
“It’s something that I definitely like – to be playing more time in the ruck… it’s my preferred position.”
