Was Sunday’s performance against Adelaide the best of Daniel Wells’ 252-game career?
You may have seen the highlight reel. You may have seen the impressive stat line.
But what did the two coaches think?
Collingwood’s Nathan Buckley and Adelaide’s Don Pyke were just as captivated by the midfielder's game, awarding him the perfect score in the AFLCA’s Champion Player of the Year voting.
After amassing 34 disposals – an equal career-high – nine marks, three tackles, six inside 50s and a mammoth 17 score involvements, Wells was a worthy recipient of the 10 coaches' votes in Collingwood’s draw against the Crows.
The 32-year-old was one of three players in the competition to have polled the maximum votes from the coaches this round.
“(On Sunday), we saw one of the most lethal ball users in the AFL,” Herald Sun journalist Jay Clark said of Wells on Collingwood Media’s ‘The Agenda’.
“He had 17 score involvements out of Collingwood’s 28 in total.
“He went at 82 per cent efficiency by foot. He zigzagged across the ground like few other players in the league.”
Joining Wells in Collingwood’s most impressive performers against the Crows was Taylor Adams.
The midfielder received seven coaches’ votes for his 34-disposal, seven-mark, eight-clearance, six-tackle and three-goal game against the Crows.
The former Giant was influential in the Magpies' first-half surge, kicking his career-best haul of goals in the first two quarters.
Adams’ midfield colleague – Steele Sidebottom – was also given seven votes for his 33 possessions against the Crows.
Forward-turned-defender Jeremy Howe was awarded three votes for his 23-disposal, eight-mark performance, while Adelaide’s Brodie Smith was the sole vote-getter for the away side with 26 disposals and eight marks.
