Despite the aftermath of Brodie Grundy’s tackle on North Melbourne’s Ben Brown on Saturday night, Collingwood midfielder Adam Treloar says he feels safer on the field in 2017 than ever before.
Treloar was on the receiving end of another potentially dangerous tackle in the second quarter at Etihad Stadium when he knocked his head on the ground after a clash in-play with Jack Ziebell.
The 23-year-old said the measures being taken by the AFL to protect players from dangerous tackles gives him confidence on the field.
“I do think in terms of (safety) it’s the best it’s ever been,” Treloar told co-host Mark Allen on Collingwood Media vodcast Sports Galore.
“I want to be safe out there. I want to be protected.
“There’s so much research on concussion and how much it can affect you post-footy. So, I think it’s going really well at the minute.”
Ruckman Grundy told Channel 7 after the game on Saturday that he was “shaken up” by the affect his second-quarter tackle had on Brown.
Treloar on Tuesday reinforced the South Australian’s kind nature.
“He doesn’t go out of his way to hurt anyone, because he’s a beautiful person.
“He has one of the best hearts of anyone I’ve met in life.”
After accepting a two-match suspension, Grundy will miss Collingwood’s upcoming games against Port Adelaide and Geelong.
His absence will leave a 202cm hole in the Magpies’ stocks, one Treloar believes is able to be filled successfully.
“It’s a good opportunity for someone else to come in and take the ruck mantle.”
