It’s all coming together for Matt Scharenberg.
After the playing the best footy of his career in the first half of the season, the 22-year-old has now penned a new two-year contract with Collingwood, which ties him to the club until the end of the 2020 season.
"A guy like 'Shaz' absolutely deserves the extension that he has got," Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley told SEN on Wednesday.
"He has had a really hard road in his short AFL career.
"He hasn’t had a lot go right for him early days but he has built resilience, both physically and mentally, and he is in a great space."
A highly rated junior, Scharenberg was selected by Collingwood with pick six in the 2013 national draft, only to suffer a host of knee and foot injuries during his first four seasons with the club.
However, he has turned his fortunes around this season, averaging 21 disposals, six marks and 3.5 rebound-50s in his 11 games while playing mostly across half-back.
"We’re only now seeing him realise the potential we saw in him when he was drafted," Magpies list manager Ned Guy told Collingwood Media.
"We’re seeing his calmness under pressure and his ability to play on talls and smalls.
"It’s a testament to his resilience after all he’s been through."
The player who went one selection after Scharenberg in the 2013 national draft, James Aish, has also signed a new two-year deal with the Pies, which will keep him at the Holden Centre until the end of the 2020 season.
The 22-year-old, who started out with the Brisbane Lions, has been sidelined in recent weeks by a knee injury, but he is expected to return to the field in the latter part of the home and away season.
"They've travelled similar paths, are both from the same state, were drafted in the same year, and they've both had their challenges trying to establish themselves," Guy said.
"Their shared journey continues with them signing on for the same period of time.
"This is recognition for the resilience and grit of both of them."
